They say the divorce rate for couples raising a special needs child is between 70-80{937ab446d7cd42ea880130e56a9bd5262764f04c0f8d39a20481bf474016ba1c}. Raising a special needs child is hard and will definitely place tremendous strain on a marriage.
FamilyAffaires.com Contributor & Psychologist, Dr. Dan Gottlieb doesn’t believe the above statistics are correct. While the number of divorces among special needs parents is high, there are may marriages that do survive. Dr. Dan talks about his own divorce that occurred after his care accident that left him disabled. Although the strains of a disability definitely added to the reasons for his divorce, it was not the only reason.
In today’s video blog Dr. Dan discussed with FamilyAffaires.com Community Advocate, Roseann Vanella the feeling of betrayal that couples experience when finding out that their loved one has been disabled or has a special need. He gives advice on what couples can discuss from the on set in order to safe guard their marriage and to be able to continue to raise a special needs child together in a supportive environment.
